I can’t believe we’re a day away from March 1 and I haven’t updated my blog since we rang in the New Year. Call it burn out, call it taking some time for myself, call it fully engulfing myself into my newest project: belt buckles.

I woke up with a start on New Year’s Day with the thought “BELT BUCKLES!” screaming in my head, and started experimenting with the style and method that I would be happy with. I have a web development background, and it has allowed me to hone in a lot of graphic design skills, which is imperative when designing belt buckles such as mine. It’s two months later and the process has been fine tuned and they’re flying off the shelves. Men and women alike LOVE them here in Halifax, and I’ve just finished designing my catalog for stores to start carrying the line.

The images I use are mostly from vintage (therefore copyright-free) images that I’ve heavily doctored, and a few other sources. I feel the same creative thrill with every new design that I bring to life as I do when I create a new cowl. I love the design process and can’t seem to stop. I’m addicted to releasing new designs!

You can keep up with all of the new releases on my Etsy store, or here on my website.

What a rush this holiday season proved to be! My cowls were carried in about 20 stores across Canada, the US and Japan, and I did many craft fairs and visited my local farmer’s market every Saturday (at least) where lots of talented crafters, bakers and farmers sell their wares. I’ve been living off of adrenaline for the past two months and now that 2011 is coming to a close my house is quieter without the sound of my Janome whirring into the night.

I’m catching up on sleep, and watching Netflix on my phone in bed, often starting before 9pm. It feels good.

Leaving my job this summer (in part) to work on Pip full time has paid off. It was my most successful year thus far. I was able to focus on my own career goals and leave a toxic environment that my day job had morphed into. I was also able to keep my child out of full time care, and that has always been a main priority of mine. My hard work paid off.

Part of my success this year was due to my mustache scarves, an idea I thought up many, many months ago- maybe even last season, but I thought that mustaches were on their way out and that the trend was coming to a close. I couldn’t have been more wrong. People still love mustaches and think that they’re hilarious, especially on a scarf, so I was very lucky to be able to cater to the masses and get some really good press and sell more of them than I ever thought imaginable. So, thank you for thinking my idea was a good one.

I’m at a crossroads now, wondering if I should brainstorm and try to think of a spring/summer product line, or go back into the daily workforce. For now, I think I’ll sleep.

Who knew? I also sold a lot of them at the Farmer’s Market I attend each Saturday, and they went into the tally as well.

In total, I donated $140 to Movember, with the help of you! You little hilarious and sarcastic customers of mine! Way to go!!

After working for BME under Shannon Larratt and being involved in the body modification community for ten years, I’m a bit of a tattoo snob and will travel far and wide to visit artists that produce quality work. I’ve only been tattooed once in Nova Scotia- a small comma under my navel, the others were by Johann Florendo in NY and Scott Duncan in Ontario. Both quality, expensive artists. Some people brag about how little it costs them to get tattooed, I brag about how much it costs. Quality costs.

Last night before I went to sleep I came up with a new idea for a chunky cowl that closes with a strip of leather. Here’s the prototype (don’t mind the loose threads!). I’m off to create some new ones!
